The structure of the website

Years of experience and contact with many websites on the World Wide Web have resulted in the fact that we have identified certain common features and regularities in most websites. The main functional modules can be distinguished. In this chapter, we want to present their division and tasks.

Website construction scheme

1. Page header

This is the part responsible for the presentation of the site, its business card. This part usually contains the logotype, name and graphic elements clearly associated with the presented content and the main theme of the website. If the website consists of several websites, it plays the role of a logical linking element.

2. Main menu

Here are the main options for each site. They can lead directly to the content or expand thematically grouped sub-options (sub-menus). The most common options are:

  1. About us (information about a person, company, organization, etc.), can be expanded, for example, by suboptions such as:
    1. Statute,
    2. Core business,
    3. Mission,
    4. Curriculum vitae,
    5. Achievements,
    6. ...
  2. Contact (contact details):
    1.  Drive,
    2.  Map, plan,
    3.  Company branches,
    4.  ...
  3. News (information about changes on the site, e.g. the appearance of a new assortment, galleries, events, etc.).
  4. Offer (information about products divided into subcategories from the selected industry, services provided, etc.).
  5. Gallery (a collection of photos, works, graphics, grouped thematically or not in categories and albums).

The options listed above are the most common options in the main menu, but of course not the only ones. Depending on the nature of the website (personal page of the user, company, institution, organization) and the scope of content contained therein, these options may occur in various variants, combinations and order.

3. Submenu

It is an extension of a group of sub-options belonging to the selected option of the main menu. It functions when it is not possible or there are other circumstances preventing the presentation of content in the form of a single website. Examples were included when discussing the main menu. In the case of small websites with a small number of subpages, the submenu can act as the main menu. In this case, the main menu in the upper part of the website does not exist. Using an appropriate template, it is possible to place this menu in a different place than on the left side (e.g. on the right).

4. Main part (page content)

This is where the actual content is presented. Appears here after selecting an option from the main menu and/or submenu. It may contain text, photos, graphics, animations, videos, as well as links to other pages of the website or external websites. This is the largest area of the site.

5. Footer

There are usually information about the authors of the website or companies / persons who are the authors of the software used in its creation. Often there are also contact details, links to important content, e.g. cookie policy, regulation, etc.
